Three stationary grinding wheels roll on a rotating grinding plate. The material to be ground is gripped between the grinding wheels and the grinding plate, and this action, caused by the pressure force and shear resulting from the rotation of the grinding plate, allows the material to be ground.

The pressure forces required for grinding are generated by a hydropneumatic pressure system. Depending on the rotation speed of the grinding plate, the ground material is discharged to the nozzle ring which injects hot or cold air and transfers the ground and dried material to the cyclone which separates the compliant products and discharges the rejects to the mill. The compliant fines are discharged from the selector by the gas stream and separated from the air by a filter.
